Big Spring Herald Weekend

Boots & Spurs

-

The Veterans Outpost of Big Spring, in conjunction with Heaven Bound Cowboy Church in Snyder, and in coordination with the West Texas VA Healthcare System, invited 10 veterans to attend a Boots and Spurs event at the church arena on Saturday, June 15, 2019.

The event included several equine activities taught by top ranch hands, including developing relationships with horses, saddling, and riding skills. In addition, there was a cookout following the event with grilled goodies and all the fixins!

The Veterans Outpost serves 33 counties in West Texas and provides peer to peer resource services to all veterans, service members and their families to include housing assistance, employment assistance, benefits navigation, and referrals to mental health and substance abuse providers. In addition to resources and referrals, the Outpost provides support in many areas; includimg, but not limited to, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Groups, Spousal Support Groups, and women veterans support groups, with training in many different areas – and the list of classes grows continuously to ensure needs are being met.

The setting in which these services are offered is non-clinical, and includes a group meeting and socializing space, a large training room, a private meeting room, computer center, and a children’s area with TV, toys and games. It’s a great place for members of all branches of the service to get together and hang out. The Outpost schedules at least one activity per month for fun and fellowship.
