Big Spring Herald Weekend

Pops in the Park Survival Guide

- By HERALD STAFF REPORT

The biggest event of the year is right around the corner. The 22nd annual Pops in the Park will be taking place July 3 at the Amphitheater.

This year the Herald once again brings you your Pops in the Park Survival Guide to help you get through the patriotic festival. This weekend, Funtastic Fourth kicked off the patriotic holiday season downtown. The first night featured country music artists Mark Chestnut and Rick Trevino; while Saturday night entertainment featured local artists leading off for headliners Buzzkill and RATT.

• First: Know the details:

This year, come prepared to be entertained as Mark Richardson and Malinda Flenniken take on the emcee job. These two are sure to keep the night rolling right along and fill the amphitheater with laughter and a fun time for all.

In the middle of the symphony performance, prior to the fireworks, a video slideshow will honor local heroes.

“That’s what we call the intermission video, and it will show the fallen heroes of Howard County, as well as some other candid shots that have been sent in by local people of their service members,” Emily Mccann said.

This year’s Pre-show headliner is Eddie Austin and the Texas Silhouettes. Austin and his band will be pumping up the crowd in preparation for the main event, fireworks accompanied by the Big Spring Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

As usual, the Symphony will take the stage around sundown and the fireworks will begin at dark.

• Arrive early.

Parking at the event is first come, first serve. The park will close when parking reaches capacity. Gates are set to open at 5 p.m. Food vendors and other vendors will be located at the top of the amphitheater. Watching from the amphitheater seats allows a memorable atmosphere for the fireworks display, but there really isn’t a bad seat in the park. For those wanting to listen to the music, but are watching from the park area, music can be found on 94.3 the Fuse and on 106.3.

• Be aware of the weather. Detailed forecasts are still a bit iffy, but temperatures have been reaching triple digits or close to. Be prepared and check out the tip box on how to avoid heat exhaustion and stay hydrated for the show.

• What to leave at home:

Vendors will be providing food and drinks, at the top of the amphitheater. Those in the park area llowed to have ice chests with drinks, but remember, no glass bottles or containers are allowed inside the park. No alcohol is allowed in the park, as well. Pets are also recommended to not be in the park, during the firework show.

Reminder, while the fireworks display can be a site to see, be courteous of others. Also, no drones are allowed near the fireworks, for safety precautions.

Happy Independence Day!
