This week's reviews include fiction, and mystery.

Sloane, Ardie, and Grace have worked together at Truviv, Inc., for years in “Whisper Network” (F BAK C) by Chandler Baker. They have supported one another through exciting promotions, long meetings, marriage, motherhood, divorce, and navigating office politics. They have their secrets. They have each other's back. They have all done something they regret. When Truviv's CEO dies suddenly, it means that their boss, Ames will likely take over the company. Ames is a complicated man, a man they've all known for a long time, a man who's always been surrounded by whispers. As he's pursuing the promotion, he's also targeting a new young female employee, and the women have decided enough is enough. Lies will be uncovered. Secrets will be exposed. And not everyone will survive. Whispers only carry so far.

The peaceful town of Painters Mill is shattered when an Amish grandmother is brutally murdered on an abandoned farm in “Shamed” (M CAS L) by Linda Castillo.

When Chief of Police Kate Burkholder arrives on the scene, she learns that the woman's seven-yearold granddaughter is gone, abducted in plain sight. Kate knows time is against her, the longer the girl is missing, the less likely her safe return becomes.

The girl's family is a pillar of the Amish community, well-respected by all. But Kate soon realizes they've been keeping secrets-and the sins of their past may be coming back to haunt them. What are they hiding and why? Kate's investigation brings her to an isolated Old Order Amish settlement along the river, a community where family is everything and tradition is upheld with an iron fist.

But the killer is close behind, drawing more victims into a twisted game of revenge. Left behind at each new crime scene are cryptic notes that lead Kate to a haunting and tragic secret. What she uncovers threatens to change everything she thought she knew about the family she's fighting for, the

Amish community as a whole and hew own beliefs. As time to find the missing girl runs out, Kate faces a harrowing choice that will test her convictions and leave one family forever changed.

Good schools, stately houses, safe neighborhoods, all set against a beautiful landscape in “The Gifted School” (F HOL B) by Bruce Holsinger.

It was with high hopes for the future that four young couples separately chose Crystal, Colorado, as the place to raise their children over a decade ago. Finding one another as friends further buoyed them over the ensuing years, as they juggled the stresses of parenthood, careers, and marriage. Even now, as the kids head for middle school, their individual interests and abilities becoming more and more distinct, the group of families has remained tight.

But when an exclusive new school is introduced into the mix, an elite new standard to meet, it represents, at long last, one pressure too many. Throughout the community, cracks begin to form and spread. As children are pitted against one another for coveted spots in the school, their parents shock themselves with the lengths they are secretly willing to go to in the pursuit of prestige and recognition. Soon long-buried resentments arise between friends and spouses alike, as ever more toxic instincts emerge. And the most shattering secret of all still lies waiting to be exposed.

Former Sherriff's investigator Cassie Dewell is trying to start her life over in private practice in “The Bitterroots” (AUCD F BOX C) by C.J. Box.

She's her own boss and answers to no one, and that's just the way she likes it after the past few tumultuous years. All that certainly changes when an old friend calls in a favor: she wants Cassie to help exonerate a man accused of assaulting a young girl from an influential family. Against her own better judgment, Cassie agrees. But out by the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana, twisted family loyalty runs as deep as ties to the land, and there's always something more to the story. The Kleinsassers have ruled this part of Montana for decades, and the Iron Cross Ranch is their stronghold. They want to see Blake Kleinsasser, the black sheep of the family, put away forever for the assault. As Cassie attempts to uncover the truth, she must fight against a family whose roots are tangled and deadly-as well as the ghost of her own past that threaten to bring her down.
