Isaiah 58 distribution changes to Monday’s
A local non-profit and non-denominational food bank in Big Spring, Isaiah 58, has a mission to feed the needy and provide for those less fortunate. When the coronavirus pandemic hit, the doors to Isaiah 58 closed for about three weeks. The staff diligently worked to design a plan that would allow the most families to be served, in the safest way possible. The past few weeks, distributions have been taking place on Sunday’s, drive-thru style. According to Nancy Stintson, the distribution is changing to Monday’s from Noon until 2 p.m.
“There isn’t a shortage of food, people are just in a panic and buying too much at one time. Truckers cannot keep up,” said Nancy Stintson, the CEO and President of Isaiah 58, said during an interview earlier this year.
The distribution will continue to be drive-thru style and those needing assistance will simply drive up and items will be placed in their vehicles. Typically, the organization gives out food every 30 days for two days for families in need, but with the demand higher than normal, the distribution process and allotment had to be altered.
Isaiah 58 will still hold the food distribution on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 809 Scurry St and provide boxes with essential items. The essentials will include non-perishable items such as canned goods which will make the package heavy and hard to carry for those on foot. Stintson along with her volunteers will be working all week putting the boxes together. However, this will be the last Sunday distribution and there will not be a distribution on May 31, in preparation for opening on June 1.
According to Stintson, there will be no contact between the consumer and volunteers as everyone will stay in their vehicles. Masks and gloves will be worn to protect themselves from possible germs and to keep everything clean.
“We are in need of monetary donations, to replenish our food stock,” she said.
She went on to explain that because the coronavirus is so prevalent throughout the Permian Basin, they cannot accept food donations at this time. Anything will help Isaiah 58 provide for the community and make sure no families are left behind. Stintson strongly urges families to bring their vehicle to pick up the boxes or ask someone to come pick up their box.
