Saddle up your horses and get ready to ride.

Paws for a Cause is ready to run Saturday, Feb. 27 with funds benefitting the Happy Day Humane Society. Entries for the event will be accepted up until the first horse runs. The 4D Barrel Race will take place at Cactus Arena in Stanton.

“I was thinking of different ways to raise money for the Happy Day Humane Society. My family take part in team roping and barrel racing which is how I came up with the Barrel Race fundraiser,” Megan Marshall, event coordinator, said.

The event will have different division allowing riders of all ages to take part. There will be a youth division as well as adult divisions at the competition. In the youth division there will be a bonus payout, and for all overall winners there will be an 80% payout. Winners will also receive buckles and the youth will receive awards for their placement.

“Our pre-entry will open about a week before the event, but those wanting to come out and compete can show up and register at the event,” Marshall said. “Registration will be open until the first horse runs.”

According to Marshall, donations and volunteer support are always welcome at Happy Day Humane Society. Funds raised from this particular event will go towards two addition play yards and repair and addition of kennels, for the dogs.

“Having the ability to have our dogs get out and run around, play and exercise during the day not only does them good, but also helps in the adoption process. With these play yards the dogs are able to get out run around and burn off some energy which means they aren’t too hyper when potential adoption families come to visit.”

For those who are not able to make it to the event, donation boxes are also set up around Big Spring at local businesses including Don't Tire, Hulls Meat Market, Big John's Feed Lot and Boyd's Auto Glass. If any other local businesses would like to have a donation box for the Humane Society, contact Marshall on Facebook or call the Humane Society.

“The funds from this event will go toward the play yards and kennels, but we are also always in need of and thankful for food donations and supply donations,” she said. “For those wanting to support us, but aren't sure how, I encourage them to call to the Humane Society and just ask how they could be of most help.”

“To be successful at making big changes, it takes commitment and more than one set of hands,” Marshall said. “Help us by helping our shelter animals live their best lives till they find their forever home.”
