Will Winter weather pull West Texas out of extreme drought?

STANTON, Texas – Area residents are grateful for the moisture received from the snow and rain over Howard and Martin counties this past month.

However, at the end of December, the U.S. Drought Monitor showed Martin and Howard counties in Extreme Drought. The Permian Basin Underground Water Conservation District monitors the drought conditions to better communicate the importance of conserving water. Keeping current drought conditions in mind, the PBUWCD would like to offer a few helpful tips on how to save water and use it wisely.

Tip 1 – Insulate water pipes to reduce heat loss, save energy, and prevent them from breaking. Winterize outdoor spigots when temperatures dip below freezing to prevent pipes from bursting or freezing.

Tip 2 – Check for leaks after any thaws. A change in temperature can cause pipes to expand and contract, which may lead to more leaks.

Tip 3 – Know where your property’s main shut off valve is located. If a pipe bursts or disaster strikes you will be able to quickly shut off the water and save hundreds of gallons of water.

Tip 4 – Adjust your sprinkler timer. When temperatures go down, water requirements for your landscape follow suite.

Tip 5 – Use a bucket to collect the cold running water while you are waiting for the water to get hot. You can then use the collected water for indoor plants or to water your pets.
