Big Spring Herald Weekend

Retired Teachers hear special treat from Tumbleweed Smith at recent meeting

Special to the Herald

The Big Spring Area Retired Teachers met Monday, Aug. 16, for the first time since February of 2020.

The guest speaker was Tumbleweed Smith, noted newspaper columnist and producer of The Sound of Texas radio series. He totally entertained the group of about 40 members and guests!

He had recordings of some of the many women he had interviewed over the years as they told of hilarious things they had done or said. One woman talked of the time she accidentally put a very small gun into a bank bag.

Several days later she took that and other bank bags to a Sonora bank. After several bank employees looked at her weirdly and went to talk to other employees in a huddle, she thought maybe she was missing an earring or eyelashes or something. Eventually the president of the bank said to her

"Linda, you're supposed to keep this and point it at us and then the money, we're supposed to give it to you."

His entire program, Outrageous Texas Women of Character, was a big hit with attendees!

The next meeting will be Sept. 20 at 11:30 a.m. in the Cactus Room at Howard College. For more information, please call Peggy at 432-270-2209.
