The beauty a flower holds - Faye’s Flowers

- By AMANDA DUFORAT Managing Editor

Oh what beauty a flower holds; the special feeling that arrives as flowers are delivered. One local flower shop – Faye’s Flowers - has been offering these special sentiments for generations.

Faye’s Flowers is owned by Mary Schuelke and Heather Schafer; the shop offers full floral services, including everyday arrangements, special occasions, private parties, weddings, sympathy designs, and more.

Schafer purchased the flower shop in 2008, but the operation has been serving the community since the 1930s, from the same location at 1013 S. Gregg.

“I worked at Faye’s Flowers while attending Howard College In the early 90s and fell in love with the business. I always told the owner I wanted to buy Faye’s from her when she was ready to retire,” she said.

After working at the flower shop locally, and others across the state, and continuing her education, Schafer found her way back to the family environment that helped grow her into the person she is today.

“Faye’s is a family friendly environment. We are here to serve you to the best of our ability. We strive to meet the needs of our customers and do not hesitate to go above and beyond for our community,” she said.

As the year crosses over to the second half, the goals remain strong for Faye’s and Schafer. In addition to keeping involvement with the community, a new line of gift ideas and merchandise will soon be arriving.

According to Schafer, the new gift line will give the customer a new hands on approach to gift giving. In addition, to get the customers and community involved, there will be basic design classes offered once in the Fall and again in the Spring.

The pandemic hit the floral industry, just as many other industries in the community, but through the announcement from Sid Miller deeming the floral industry as necessary, the impact wasn’t as hard it as it could have been.

“The pandemic has been interesting for sure. We are cautious to respect our customers wishes,” she said. “Faye’s is thankful that Sid Miller deemed the floral industry as necessary as it directly supports agriculture all over the state and world.”

As Schafer and her staff continue to navigate through the new normal, as the pandemic continues, her drive to support community remains a top priority. In addition, she is grasping onto what she deems her biggest opportunity, which is to support other women.

“I don’t know much about starting up a business since I purchased a long established business, but community support is a major foundational piece. Supporting local business is great for forming partnerships, but it’s also great for community growth,” Schafer said.
