Big Spring Herald Weekend

Week 3 Friday night final: Forsan keeps early-season momentum, Steers, Buffs, and Bearkats all fall

- By DUSTIN POPE Herald Sports Writer

Well, it was a tough night of football if you're a fan of any local team besides the super-hot Forsan Buffaloes. All our regional teams, except for the amazing Forsan Buffs, lost this Friday night. Big Spring traveled down to Monahans only to come up short 28-13. Next, the Coahoma Bulldogs lost to Eldorado 56-24, and last, and certainly not least, the Garden City Bearkats fell to Water Valley 54-8, but those Forsan Buffs pushed their record to 3-0 as they put yet another beating on an opponent this time it was the Stanton Buffaloes winning 45-7.

Let's lead off on a bright note. The way the Forsan Buffs are playing is such a good story. This young team has come out on fire, and they are playing great football right now. This Friday, they traveled to Stanton to take on the other Buffaloes. This was not even close as the Forsan Buffs came on rolling and kept that same momentum going. The Forsan Buffs are playing some great football right now, and tonight was no different. Forsan came into this Friday with a perfect 2-0 record. They made it an easy 3-0 as they outclassed yet another opponent on the year. Stanton was just no match for Forsan in the battle of the buffaloes. It was Forsan rushing attack that led the way for them tonight. Chris Mendez led the way with 16 carries for 150 yards and a TD. Nate Hernandez was second on the team in rush yardage as he had 119 yards and a TD on 18 carries. Kevin Kligora carried the ball 11 times for 93 yards and a TD, and Major Stockton continued his excellent play as he took the ball six times for 21 yards and 2TD. Stockton also completed four balls for 107 yards and a TD. So far, the speed on the field has stood out to me every time Forsan takes the field; they are dangerous. So far, there has been no team that can match up with them. They have played tremendous football to this point in the season, and they have earned that 3-0 record.

The Coahoma Bulldogs fell to 1-2 on the season on the road in Eldorado. Facing a tough Eldorado team, Coahoma came up short this Friday night as they lost the game 56-24. It wasn't for lack of effort in the game as the Bulldogs fought to the very last whistle; unfortunately, they just came up short. This Bulldog team will still be very dangerous. They just ran into an adamant team in the Eldorado Eagles. The Bulldogs are loaded with talent across the board; they are just a very young team. Once this team puts it all together, they will be the dangerous week in week out.

This Friday night, the Big Spring Steers lost their first game of the year as they fell to the Monahans Lobos in Monahans 28-13. The Steers started on the right foot as they took the opening drive and scored easy. However, it was tough sledding for the Steers after that as they ran into a good team in Monahans. The Lobos did a great job at controlling the clock all game long by keeping the ball on the ground for the most part. Big Spring still played very hard all game long; it just wasn't their night tonight. No doubt that they will learn from this and will come back even more potent than ever before.

Garden City went down the road to take on Water Valley. Unfortunately, like most of our local teams' things just dint go their way as they lost 54-8. The loss sends the Bearkats to a 1-2 record on the year. Like all our other teams in this area, they played their butt off. But they just played a better team tonight. This team leaves it all on the field for every play; they play hard. The Bearkats will undoubtedly bounce back from this, and they will grow stronger as a team.

While it was a tough night for most of the teams in this area, the top story must be the play of the Forsan Buffaloes. This team is flat out on fire right now, they are playing with significant confidence, and it shows in their play on the field. As for the other team, hey, you learn from this week and get better, plain and simple. I know that every group will come back stronger.
