Mental Health: Emotional well being matters

- By DUSTIN POPE Manging Editor

Mental health is a very tricking, sometimes even complicated, subject to talk about. It can be trying for someone to recognize they may be depressed or going through an arduous time. The fact of the matter is that most of us will deal with some mental health issues in our lives. Life can be demanding; we all can work through the struggles of everyday living. Sometimes it is just a lot to deal with, and we may not know the appropriate approach to deal with life's dilemmas.

That's why speaking up when you are battling is just so critical. So many times, it upsets people they may be depressed. Or maybe you are dealing with something way beyond depression. Perhaps it is an addiction that you can't shake. Whatever you are going through, it is ok to talk to someone. Let anyone who will listen know what's going on. Because when you don't speak up and communicate about what your troubles are, then often, they can get worse. There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to your mental health. Unfortunately, so many people stay silent and don't speak up when they need to the most. This can lead to a precarious game. Mental Health is no joking matter. How we feel and how we deal with those feelings is so extraordinarily important. This life is way too short and precious to throw away over being too prideful to admit when you have a complication.

Over the last few years, mental health and well-being have been more prevalent. Some many athletes and actors have admitted their encounters with addiction, and of course, being depressed. Many people wonder how these stars could even be depressed; I mean, they have everything they could ever want, right? Well, guess what? They are human, just like you and me, and they also live lives

we don't see. Some of these athletes and actors have the spotlight to let their problems be known, so maybe their story will get out, and someone else will reach out for help. That is precisely what Simone Biles did at the Tokyo Olympics. As hard as it had to be for her, she took a step back and put her mental health first, with the entire world watching. Biles knew she wasn't ok and needed support. This is a prime example of what a true champion looks like. She came out in front of the biggest stage in the world and asked for help. If everyone who had problems did this, then we would make great strides in learn

-ing more about how to deal with our emotional issues. Listen, you may not be Simone Biles, but if you are reading this, then I'm assuming you are human, and we are all prone to having problems. No matter how much we want to be, we are not perfect. It is not a sign of weakness; it's a sign of being strong-willed to speak up.

Since Simone Biles has stood up for Mental Health, we have seen a drastic shift to how we, the public, are reacting to the situation. More and more people are coming forward admitting that they are struggling or having problems. Sometimes all it takes is a frontrunner, and maybe that is precisely what Biles is. She was one of the first and won't be the last. The more education is out there about mental health, the better off we will all be. Biles was not the first person to ever speak up about these issues, but being she did it at one of the biggest stages of all time, it has had more impact than most. Now that she spoke up, there have been many other celebrities talking about their issues as well. I'm sure it has opened the door for a lot of us to feel more comfortable speaking about the tricky subject.

I dealt with many issues myself for a long time and kept quiet about it because it embarrassed me. I felt depressed. Unfortunately, I wasn't strong enough to admit that I had a problem. I was in denial, and I'm telling you from experience that's not the right thing to do to yourself. I spent years of my life struggling when, if I had just been brave enough to admit I was working with my feelings, I could have had peace long before I revived it.

We live in challenging times; no matter who you are or how perfect you may think your life is, we all have problems that we have to deal with daily. So if you or somebody you know is struggling with mental health issues, please reach out and get the help you need; it is there for us to use.
