Say Something Week is an initiative lead by the Sandy Hook Promise. The focus is to gear activities toward students in Fourth Grade through Seniors, in an effort to create a culture to prevent school violence and encourage students to use their voice to say something when they see something.
Forsan High School is taking part in this initiative with their junior high and high school students. Throughout the week, students discussed different ways that they could “say something” in different situations, and even had the opportunity to take part in a photo opportunity in the hallway.
“We want to make sure that our students know that their voice matters; that they matter,” Hanna Carter, Forsan High School Principal, said.
Sany Hook Promise is a national nonprofit organization that was founded by several family members who lost loved ones in the Sandy Hook Elementary
School tragedy, on Dec. 14, 2012. According to the Sandy Hook Promise website, the intent is to honor all victims of gun violence by turning tragedy into a moment of transformation. This is possible through the ability to empower youth to “know the signs” and uniting all people who value the protection of children.
“This program is an open door for teachers and students to talk about a very real issue and provide encouragement to them. Sometimes we need to remind our youth that it is okay to speak up, and that they shouldn’t let their age limit them and the power that they hold to make a difference,” she said. “Every voice matters and every student is important. We want to make sure that they know that, and this is just one way that we can do that.”
