A voice is a powerful thing, and during the month of April, members of the community are encouraged to use their voices and speak out against child abuse. National Child Abuse Prevention Month is recognized in April, and offers an opportunity for communities to raise awareness for the often overlooked issue.

“Children may not be able to voice what is happening to them, but as a community, we can show a united front and be their voice,” April Arms, Executive Assistant at Scenic Mountain Medical Center, said. “If you suspect something, say something. Be the voice for those who feel that they don’t have one.”

Scenic Mountain Medical Center will be hosting the eighth annual Stand Up Howard County Child Abuse Prevention event on April 21 from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. The community is invited to enjoy the free, family-oriented event. According to Arms, there will be more than 40 organizations, businesses and services represented.

“We have local school organizations, civic organizations, child oriented community services, and more who have partnered with us to raise awareness for child abuse,” Arms said. “Those attending will be able to gather information on how they can do their part to prevent child abuse and become involved in the community by supporting local agencies.” According to statistics, Howard County reported 516 cases of child related abuse in 2021. Locally there are a handful of agencies

who provided services to children involved in cases involving abuse, including Howard County Children's Advocacy Center, Victims Services, C.A.S.A. of West Texas, B.A.C.A, (Bikers Against

Child Abuse), just to name a few.

“We would like to think that child abuse doesn't exist in our community, but the reality of the matter is that it does. Child abuse exists and the only way to put a stop to it is to stand up and stand together,” Arms said. “As a community we need to be educated on signs to recognize what to do if we notice something, and then be encouraged to speak up. We are in this together, and our youth need us.”

There is no cost to attend the event, but those who would like to bring a new stuffed animal to donate are encouraged to do so.

The donations will be provided to local organizations to be used as needed.
