Big Spring Herald Weekend

Second time around...

Kudos to the Coahoma softball team. It never ceases to amaze me. Last week the Lady Dawgs went to Lubbock to play Frenship, the district leader in 6-2A. Coahoma wins 2-1. I have a friend that tells me I'm going to jinx Coahoma by talking about it so much. I say the truth is the truth. Coahoma is good. Nothing fazes this team. They've been to the lion's den and they always survive.

Speaking of surviving, the Snyder Lady Tigers didn't do it. They came to Big Spring with a chance to move into a second place tie with Big Spring. Snyder had beaten Big Spring 2-1 in the first meeting.

The Lady Steers simply devoured the Snyder, winning handily 12-2 in five innings. Big Spring is an up-and-down team. Sometimes they play really well, like they played against Snyder. Some times they are lackadaisical and it seems they are just not with it, like a 7-0 loss to Colorado City.

Coach Chelsey Jordan's crew is currently on a six game winning streak and their bats have picked up. Kayln Whitehead and Brinly Watkins are adequate pitchers. If the bats stay active, I put my money on Big Spring winning the district championship. Watkins is swinging a hot bat of late, hitting three homers last week, being named Big Country Player of the Week by the Abilene Reporter News. Watkins has 10 homers for the season.

BS TRACK RULES Congratulations to the Big Spring Seers and Lady Steers for bringing another district championship to Big Spring this season. Goes right beside the district tennis and golf championships Big Spring recently won.

We all knew the Steers would pull it off. They've won six meets this year. The Lady Steers removed all doubt Big Spring is the superior in 3-4A track. Big Spring was successful because it had a number of good athletes, not great athletes, but good. Good enough to nickel and dime opponents to death.

Good thing is Big Spring has talented underclass people like junior half miler Adrian Solis, sophomore sprinter Abram Jackson, sophomore hurdler Alex Mehan and freshman jumper-sprinter Naomi Wines.

Then there's the usual point scorers like distance runner Roman Perez, weight people Braxton Pearson and Jha'niah Johnson and steady seniors Kayla Mathews and Elisabeth Jones.

Hope Pearson makes it back to state in the discus. Maybe some of his teammates will join him. GOLFERS HEADED TO STATE

The Garden City Lady Bearkats are headed to the state tournament by virtue of their regional championship at Lubbock. Garden City won by thirty strokes over second place Ft. Elliott. Garden City was led by Shelby Braden who shot a two day total of 181. Rylee Wood shot a 183 and Kara Roberts shot a 201. All finished in the top 10 in the medalist race.

Also in class 1A play Grady's Braden Welch is headed to state via being the second medalist. Welch shot a 84-86 for a 170 total. This will be his third trip to the state tournament.

The Forsan Bufaloes earned a trip to state in 2A play by finishing third in team play. Forsan shot 368-379 for a 747 total. Vega won with 639 followed by New Home at 746. Kade Nichols led the Buffaloes by shooting a 82-84 for 166.

Colorado City's Will Maddox just missed returning to the state tournament. He shot an 81-82 for a 160 total, finishing fourth. Last year Maddox finished second at the Class 2A state golf tournament.

Coach Mike Scarbrough's Big Spring Steers finished ninth at the at the Region I-4A tournament. The Steers, who are all underclassmen, shot a 324322 for a 36 hole total of 646. Argyle (577) won the tournament while perennial powerhouse Andrews (606) was second and Bridgeford (617) was third.

Big Spring's Reece Harris was tied for first medalist after his first round score of 72. On the second day he shot a 75 for a 147, finishing 10th.
