6th annual Special Ed prom held at Silver Hills

About 90 area special education students got together for a prom at Big Spring's Club at Silver Hills Thursday.

The event was organized by the 87-20 Shared Service Arrangement organization, and this marks the sixth year the prom has brought local special needs kids from Coahoma, Forsan, Glasscock County, Grady, Stanton and Greenwood together.

“We do events throughout the year, but our last one is our prom,” said event organizer Brinnan Wright. “We have junior

high and high school self-contained special education students, and we do it during the day, so we can make sure everybody gets to participate.

Wright said the staff of the Silver Hills country club has worked hard to make the day a memorable one for the students involved.

“We teamed up with Silver Hills last year. Ginny Ellis and Kristen Partee out at Silver Hills, and all their staff have assisted us with this event,” she said. “Basically they just took it and ran with it. They reached out to the community this year

asking for volunteers that wanted to volunteer their services or their time to help make this event very special for our students.”

The local community responded in a big way. “The community just stepped up,” she said. “They came, and we had everything pretty much donated, from the D.J., the photo booth, decorations, the food and a bounce house, all donated. Those people who donated those things, they came and they stayed and they served and assisted our students. It was just a huge community effort. Mostly from Big Spring, but we also had some from Midland.”

Wright said the event was a great time for both students and parents.

“They all came together, our kids, and enjoyed a time with their peers, and they're able to kind of network and see friends they've made from other districts through the year at things we've done,” she said. “Also, parents are welcome to come and it gives them time to kind of network and meet other parents who are going through the kinds of things they're going through. We're trying to create community, is what we're trying to do.'
