How ‘Perry Mason’ made a comeback

- BY JAY BOBBIN

Though a classic series might have been revived by a single Tv-movie in the 1970s and 1980s, it wasn’t as common for it to become a regular attraction again. One of the first shows to prove that viable was the law drama “Perry Mason” ... and its resurgence began with the 1985 film “Perry Mason Returns,” which METV presents Sunday, May 8.

Mason has become a judge, but he resigns that position to become a practicing attorney again, representing a very special client: his former secretary, Della Street. Played again by Barbara Hale, she’s a murder suspect – and Mason gets help in defending her from the son of his earlier investigator Paul Drake, played by William Katt (“The Greatest American Hero”), Hale’s son in real life.
