BSI named Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School

- Special to the Herald

Big Spring Intermediate School

Big Spring Intermediate received the honor of being named Capturing Kids' Hearts National Showcase School for the 3rd year in a row.

The school received the news on May 5. There were at least 600 schools who were considered but only 377 were selected as Showcase schools.

The process involves submitting data on attendance, discipline, and suveys completed by faculty, staff, administrators, parents, and most importantly the students.

Some questions asked are: “Do you feel loved and welcomed by your teachers?”, “Do you want to attend school and if so why?”

Students create a social contract at the beginning of the year but so do the faculty and staff. The social contract is an agreement on how everyone is to treat each other.

Some of the words on the contract include, respect, Golden Rule, kind, loving, and fairness.

Teachers choose ambassadors and those students greet guests at the door and inform them of the educational objective of the day.

Receiving such an honor does not happen overnight. It has been a process. It has helped to change the image of our campus.

It is a campus that loves kids and captures hearts. Are we perfect? No, not by any means and CKH is not the save all of education. But it is a great tool for any educator's tool belt.

I am extremely honored and so proud of our campus, kiddos, and parents. It truly takes a village and Big Spring is an amazing village.

This is not just a BSI honor, it's a community honor because it takes all of us to ensure our kiddos receive an good education in a loving, engaging, fun, and safe environment.
