Howard College Board to discuss tax abatement
The Howard County Junior College District Board of Trustees – the governing board for Howard College's three campuses and of the Southwest College for the Deaf – will discuss tax abatement guidelines and criteria when they meet Monday.
The board will meet in closed executive session at 11 a.m. before breaking for lunch. The public hearing, followed by the board's open session, will begin at 12:30 p.m.
Following the public hearing, the board will start its open meeting with an invocation and recognition of guests before hearing any public comments or communication from the public to the board..
Next, the board will consider approval of routine matters, including minutes of its March 28 regular meeting, financials for March, monthly reports of auxiliary services, personnel matters and the internal audit report.
Moving into New Business, the board will consider action on the matters discussed during the public hearing – tax abatement guidelines and criteria. In addition, the board will consider an upcoming tax abatement hearing.
Next, the board will consider Howard College's response to COVID-19, as well as the Open Howard College response plan to the pandemic.
The board will consider matters related to performance measures and outcomes, including access, student success and student debt, community and workforce development, and performance excellence, including tuition and fee comparisons and student roundtable reports.
The board will also consider purchasing for food service, vending services for the college's Lamesa and San Angelo campuses, and asbestos abatement at the college's Library and Music Building, as well as abatement and demolition at the SWCD Diagnostic Center. Other topics on the agenda include the college's Associate of Applied Science in Registered
Medical Assistant (RMA) degree, and the Pharmacy Technician Workforce Training Continuing Education certificate.
The board will consider handbook and catalog changes, faculty contracts, new positions, resolutions regarding faculty retirements and professor emeritus nominations.
The board will hear reports on construction and renovation projects, including the Big Spring and SWCD campus roofing projects, and consideration of change orders on those projects.
The board will also hear an update on the Library and Music Building renovation projects.
The board will hear an update on implementation of the Student Information System project.
Finally, College President Dr. Cheryl Sparks will provide her regular President's Report, including information about upcoming activities and recognitions.
