DAV recognizes local businesses

- By AMANDA DUFORAT

Together a community can make an impact that has a lasting effect. Recently, the D.A.V. of Big Spring Chapter 47 recognized two local businesses who have stepped up and supported local veterans. Appreciation signs were presented to Higginbotham and Big Spring Outdoors.

"We have tremendous support from the community, and we appreciate it," Ed Meiser, D.A.V. Commander of Chapter 47 Big Spring, said.

Higginbotham and Big Spring Outdoor representatives were on hand to receive their signs, which were presented by Sr. Vice Commander Mike Tarpley.

"These signs are our way of showing our appreciation for those businesses in the community who have stepped up and offered their continuous support for local veterans throughout the year," Tarpley said. "With these signs, the community is able to see who has supported us and while they are supporting that business they can also extend their gratitude for their support."

After the presentation of the signs, members continued with routine business and reviewed their recent activities. The most recent fundraiser for the D.A.V. was the Comedy Night hosted by Adrienne Green. According to Green, this event brought in a little more than $2,400.

"It was a fun evening of laughter and raising awareness for what we do through the D.A.V.," Tarpley said. "Before the evening concluded we were also able to present a Quilt of Valor to an attending veteran."

In addition to local support, Veteran Mike Tarpley and Veteran Danny Martinez recently returned from the annual Purple Heart Hunt held in Eden, Texas.

"Since I was an honoree several years back I have been going back and volunteering my services of taking photographs and video for the veterans to have," Danny Martinez, D.A.V. of Big Spring Secretary, said. "Mike (Tarpley) also offers his woodworking items as another way of bringing in donations for the hunt, and each year, they send a donation back with us."

This year, Martinez reported that the D.A.V. of Big Spring received a little more than $800 from those donations.

As the year is wrapping up, there are a few more activities to be supported by the local chapter of the D.A.V. Those wanting to offer monetary donations or join in any upcoming outreach and/or fundraising events may contact Mike Tarpley or Ed Meiser.
