BIG SPRING HERALD ATHLETE’S OF THE WEEK

- By PATRICK GONZALES HERALD Sports Editor

We enter week seven of the Big Spring Herald's Athletes of the Week voted by you the fans! Again there were many top performers in week four from our Crossroads teams and once again the fans have spoken!

This week's Male and Female Athletes of the Week, voted by you the fans, are Don “Diego” Rios from Big Spring and Cayhill Lewis from Coahoma. MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

DON “DIEGO” RIOS – BIG SPRING STEERS CROSS COUNTRY

The Big Spring Steers cross country team competed in it's district meet last Thursday in Lubbock at Mae Simmons Park. The Steers finished second overall as a team and for the fouth straight year qualified to the Class 4A Region I meet. Leading the way for the Steers was junior Don “Diego” Rios who finished first overall to capture the individual district crown. Rios finished the boy's 5K course in a time of 17:57.43. Rios, a junior and third year varsity runner for Big Spring, is tapped to help lead the team this year after the Steers lost all of it's state qualifying runners to graduation last year. Per Steers head cross country coach, Brandon Clemmons, Rios has been given the opportunity to shine on his own this year and not be in the shadows of his former teammates. “Diego has developed into one of the leaders of this years team who has a strong work ethic. He's a great kid who continues to work hard at

everything he does and his success this season has earned him well-deserved recognition and time in the spotlight.” Clemmons said of Rios. FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

CAYHILL LEWIS – COAHOMA BULLDOGETTES VOLLEYBALL

Last week, Bree Lewis was named the Female Athlete of the Week from the Coahoma Bulldogettes volleyball team. This week her older sister, Cayhill Lewis has earned the top honor as she was voted as this week's Female Athlete of the Week. This marks the first time that two-siblings have earned the honor. Cayhill Lewis was played an important role in the Bulldogettes win over Brownfieldlast Saturday as she finished the game with 5 kills, 1 assist, 2 blocks, and 3 digs. Cayhill followed that performance up with another strong performance against Lamesa this past Tuesday, posting 5 kills in the match to help the Bulldogettes secure a playoff spot.

Congratulations to both Don “Diego” Rios from Big Spring and Cayhill Lewis from Coahoma on being named this week's Big Spring Herald Athletes of the Week.
