Big Spring Steer Pantry set in new space

- By ANDREIA MEDLIN Editor

The Big Spring Steer Pantry is up and running and is offering lots more than pantry staples. Clothing, shoes, toiletries and even prom dresses are neatly tucked away for those in need.

The service is free for those who qualify and have a student enrolled in BSISD.

Big Spring High School Chemistry Teacher, Stephanie Laplante wants everyone to know that the Pantry is available, but that there is a process to partake of the goods.

“As long as there is a registered BSISD student in the family the goods are available,” explained Laplante.

Foodstuffs available are primarily staples such as canned goods, pasta, rice, beans, etc., but also include diapers and now includes some perishables.

The pantry is stocked and the boxes are filled by Life Skills students and the non-perishable items are provided by the West Texas Food Bank once a month.

Two food drives are held each year by Family Career and Communities of America and the National Honor Society.

“The boxes contain two days worth of food, two breakfasts, two lunches and two dinners,” said Laplante.

Currently, the distribution is operated in a store like atmosphere where families can come and shop.

For new participants a BSISD student has to present an ID, and the number will be checked at following visits.

The Steer Pantry has been moved to its new home in the technology building and has expanded to include a clothing closet.

The service is no longer a drive through and shoppers can park in the east parking lot for easy access to the entry to the Technology Building.

There are other such pantries in Coahoma ISD and Forsan ISD as well.

Donations of clothing and home goods are being accepted, but they have to be clean and must adhere to school district guidelines and only newly packaged under garments will be accepted.

Monetary donations are also being accepted in the business office.

All donations are greatly appreciated as Laplante commented, “Everything is appreciated. We are trying to make it comfortable to get clothes and other goods and not feel ashamed.”

The Steer Pantry is open every Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
