The State National Bank of Big Spring names Blerina Higgins Employee of the Year

Blerina Higgins grew up speaking Albanian in Kosovo, a country north of Greece and east of the boot heel of Italy. “I came to the Dallas area in 2007 when I was 14,” says Blerina. “In 2012 we moved to Big Spring because we had family here. I came with my parents and two brothers who live here now. We left family and friends back in Kosovo because there was better education and more opportunit­ies here. I've been back to Kosovo a few times. It's very beautiful and green, snows a lot and there are lots of mountains.”

Blerina has been with the State National Bank two years and works mostly in the loan department.

She has a degree in Marketing from UTPB where she took several courses in accounting.

On some occasions people ask about her accent, which is barely noticeable.

That's when her mischievou­s streak comes out. “Once I told someone I was from Wisconsin and they believed me.” She and her husband Dustin have a four-year-old daughter, Alana. “We love to take her to beaches.”

She says working at State National was the best job decision she has made. “Working here has a good feel to it. My co-workers make me feel included and take good care of me. They're very good people. I'm grateful for the opportunit­y to work here. There are people more deserving than me to be the employee of the year but I'm thankful for the honor.”
