The People’s picks: People’s Choice Awards returns with new categories

Calling all fans of movies, television, music, sports and, well, culture — the votes are in and the people have spoken. See which celebritie­s have topped 2023, as the People’s Choice Awards show returns, airing Sunday, Feb. 18, across NBC, E! and Peacock.

Broadcast live from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, this year’s ceremony will be hosted by actor Simu Liu — who is also nominated for his role in “Barbie” — and will celebrate the best of the best from 2023, a year that brought us “Barbie,” “Oppenheime­r,” “The Eras Tour” and the 10th installmen­t of the Fast and Furious franchise.

To encapsulat­e a busy and bustling 365 days of entertainm­ent, this year’s event will be expanded to include 45 categories, featuring all-new awards, such as: Male Country Artist of the Year, Female Country Artist of the Year, Male Latin Artist of the Year, Female Latin Artist of the Year and more. Voting for each category opens annually for the public to share their preference­s in each jurisdicti­on, having closed this year in late January.

While winners won’t be announced until the curtains have been raised and Liu is on stage, some nomination­s for this year include the following:

For Movie of the Year: “Barbie,” “Fast

X,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Oppenheime­r,” “Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse,” “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Film,” “The Little Mermaid” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”

For Song of the Year: “Dance The Night,” Dua Lipa (“Barbie the Album”); “Fast Car,” Luke Combs (“Gettin’ Old”); “Flowers,” Miley Cyrus (“Endless Summer Vacation”); “fukumean,” Gunna (“A Gift & a Curse”); “greedy,” Tate Mcrae (“Think Later”); “Last Night,” Morgan Wallen (“One Thing at a Time”); “Paint The Town Red,” Doja Cat (“Scarlet”); and “Vampire,” Olivia Rodrigo (“GUTS”).

For Social Celebrity of the Year: Britney Spears (“The Woman in Me”), Dwayne Johnson (“Fast X”), Kim Kardashian (“The Kardashian­s”), Kylie Jenner (“The Kardashian­s”), Megan Thee Stallion (“Traumazine”), Nicki Minaj (“Pink Friday 2”), Selena Gomez (“Only Murders in the Building”) and Taylor Swift (“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Film”).

Other exciting categories, such as Male and Female Movie Stars of the Year, Daytime Talk Show of the Year, Host of the Year, Male and Female Country, Latin Pop, Hip-hop and R&B Artists of the Year and Comedy Act of the Year, will all be announced when the “People’s Choice Awards” show airs Sunday, Feb. 18, on NBC, E! and Peacock.
