Lady Steers race to third district title at the District 5-4A track meet

Rios, Threats, and Marquez punch tickets to area meet

SAN ANGELO, TX – For the third year in a row, the Big Spring Lady Steers track team raced to it's third consecutiv­e district title after competing in the District 5-4A meet this past Wednesday and Thursday in San Angelo.

The Lady Steers garnered 140 points overall to best second place Lubbock Estacado. Overall, the Lady Steers qualified nine individual­s and all three of it's relay teams to the Area meet.

Senior's Alexa Mehan and Dorcas Jones paced the Lady Steers over the two-day meet with Mehan capturing gold in the varsity girls 100 meter hurdles, while Jones won the varsity girls 400 meter dash.

Mehan won her race in a time of 15.84 beating out second place by over a second. Jones won her race by four seconds running to a time of 1:00.69 in the 400 meter dash.

Mehan also qualified in the varsity girls 300 meter hurdles finishing second overall in the event, while also qualifying in the long and triple jump events where she finished second and third.

Jones also qualified in the varsity girls 200 meter dash where she finished third overall. Jones was also a member in the 4x400 meter relay team which finished first overall. The team also consisted of Alysandra De La Cruz, Luna Jimenez, and Bergan Pinkley.

Other area qualifiers included senior Kyleena Hughes (4th – 200M), sophomore's Emily Carreron (4th – 100M); Bergan Pinkley (2nd – 800M and 400M); Luna Jimenez (3rd – 800M and 4th – 400M). Natalia Pedraza qualified in the varsity girls pole vault finishing fourth overall.

Big Spring's Tara Porter and Ta'tiyana Jones both qualified in the varsity girl's shot put with Porter finishing third overall and Jones finishing fourth.

The Lady Steers 4x100 and 4x200 meter relay teams finished third overall in each event. Big Spring's 4x100 meter relay team consisted of Carreron, Hughes, as well as Kenna Taylor and Izabell Hillario. Carreron and Taylor also ran in the 4x200 meter relay along with Bre Woodruff and De La Cruz.

On the boy's side, the Steers finished sixth in the team standings scoring 74 points. Junior Diego Rios and sophomore's Eithan Threats and Jacob Marquez punched their tickets to the area meet.

Rios captured gold in both the varsity boy's 3200 meter and 800 meter races. Rios finished the 3200 meter race in a time of 10:39.05 for first place while running a 2:01.28 in the 800 meter race. Rios also qualified in the varsity boys 1600 meters finishing second overall with a time of 4:46.11

Threats won gold in both the varsity boy's 110 meter and 300 meter hurdle events. Threats won the 110M hurdles in a time of 16.17, while winning the 300 meter hurdle event in a time of 42.43.

Sophomore Jacob Marquez also qualified to the area meet as well finishing third in the 3200 meter run and fourth in the 1600 meter run.

The Lady Steers and Steers' qualifiers will compete next in the Region I District 5 & 6 Area meet in Abilene on Friday April 12th.
