10 local teachers awarded HOPE grants

- By AMANDA DUFORAT Managing Editor

Building hope for the future begins with the youth of the community. The HOPE Foundation understands local teachers, band directors, art instructors and other educational staff have a big influence on a student’s future, which is why The HOPE Foundation is choosing to invest in those teachers.

For 2019, The HOPE Foundation awarded 10 grants to local teachers, which means it’s time to rebuild the fund. Grant recipients included: BSI teachers Tammie Flores and Bailey Fredrickson; Kentwood teacher Ann Casebeer; Big Spring High School teachers Allen Morris, Holly Barfield, Gershom Garcia and Andrea Phinney; Big Spring Junior High teachers Katelyn Graham and Kathryn Naron; and Jennifer Thomas with Big Spring ISD.

According to Linda Conway, board member for the HOPE Foundation, the third annual non-event fundraiser is currently underway.

“There are a lot of good organizations in this community and numerous of events take place to support those causes, but we also understand there are those who want to help support organizations but not attend an event,” Conway said. “People are busy and this allows them to offer support without having to make time for a function.”

The HOPE Foundation is designed to provide grants on an annual basis to BSISD teachers in order to provide them with assistance to implement innovative and creative activities in the classroom.

“Our main goal is to make a difference in the lives of the teachers and the students,” she said. “Our Non-Event fundraiser is just an easy, fun way to support some really creative ideas that will benefit our youth and in the long run, our community.”

Some of the levels include: $15, I don’t want to buy any candy bars, candles or bake sale items; $25, I do not want to walk,

swim or run in any activity that has the word “thon” n it. This also covers the cost of the “free shirt” I will not get.; and any other amount, I am making this donation to express my appreciation for having nothing to buy, sell, or do except fill out this form.

“We truly appreciate the support of the community and have had good success the past few years

with this fundraiser. We are expecting this year to be no different,” she said.

For those wanting to donate to The HOPE Foundation, donations can be mailed to 102 Washington Blvd, Big Spring, Texas. For more information, call 432-263-7294.
