- By AMANDA DUFORAT Managing Editor

The award winning voice of the Big Spring Cowboy Reunion and Rodeo is returning once again. Mike Mathis, rodeo announcer of Lufkin, Texas will be in the arena, on horseback for the rodeo June 20-22.

“Mike is a true cowboy and an ultimate professional in the sport of rodeo; a sport that has come so far form its origin, but never forgotten its roots and the priniciples it stands on,” Derek Wash, Rodeo Board Member, said. “Having him continue to be a part of our rodeo, for over 20 years means so much to our board.”

Part of the ambiance of the Rodeo is hearing Mathis and seeing him in the middle of the arena, as he announces and providing a unique insight into the rodeo events. In addition to the Big Spring Cowboy Reunion and Rodeo, he also announces more than 40 rodeos throughout the year. His announcing career has taken him all across the United States, including Canada, Mexico City and Brazil. He has been the voice of major rodeos in Cheyenne, Salt Lake City, Jackson Mississippi, Angola Prison Rodeo in Louisiana, and AQHA World Championship Show.

His voice has earned him the PBR Announcer award for six years, National Steer Roping Finals announcer four times and he has been selected in the top 5 announcer of the PRCA the last 12 years.

“Growing up going to this rodeo every year and now serving many years on the board, I feel that the name Mike Mathis is synonymous with the Big Spring Cowboy Reunion and Rodeo,” Wash said. “It’s the voice that we all have come to expect to hear every year say those great words, ‘Hello Big Spring and Welcome to the annual Big Spring Cowboy Reunion and Rodeo.’”

Rodeo tickets are available at several outlets around town and can be purchased at the gate, each night of the rodeo.

“This is going to be a great year at the 86th annual Big Spring Cowboy Reunion and Rodeo,” Wash said.
