Big Spring ISD plans to honor the members of the 1956 football team, band, and cheerleading squad before their opening game of the season this Friday, Aug. 28, at Memorial Stadium. That bunch was the first-ever team to play in Memorial Stadium and are all an important part of the history of Big Spring.

It has now been announced that all former players, band members, and cheerleaders should arrive at Big Spring High School for a tour of the school at 8:15 on the morning of August 28.

There will also be a pep rally on the morning of the game at Blankenship Field that all of those lifelong Steers are invited to attend. That pep rally will begin at 10:30 and will include those 1956 Steers taking the field in front of the student body.

Later in the day Friday, Principal Mike Ritchey is asking everyone to arrive at the South Entrance of Memorial Stadium at 6:30 p.m. All the members of that team from over 60 years ago will then enter the game together.

All of those former Big Spring players, cheerleaders, and band members will be honored on the field before watching their Steers go to battle on the gridiron in the season-opening game against the Vernon Lions.
