Big Spring Art Association gear up for September in-person meeting at Brushworks

- By AMANDA DUFORAT Managing Editor

Students are back in the classrooms, community events are slowly coming back and organizations who have put off face to face meetings are coming back together. The Big Spring Art Association is one of the many organizations who had placed in person meetings on hold when the pandemic swept in. Over the past few weeks, members have been getting together through creative ways to create art together, while staying safe. However, beginning in September, the Big Spring Art Association will be bringing back in person meetings.

According to Kay Smith, the group will meet on Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. at Brushworks Studio, located at 2106 Scurry.

“We typically meet at the Howard County Library, but due to the library being closed for meetings at this time, we will meet at my studio,”

The September meeting, according to Smith, will be the first meeting of the new year. Members will need to bring their annual dues to the meeting. Visitors and those wanting to find out more about the Art Association are welcome to attend the September meeting.

“We want visitors to come join us and see what we are about,” Smith said. “We will observe CDC guidelines/precautions such as hand sanitizer, social distancing at six feet apart, masks, etc.”

As per usual, there will be light refreshments available during the meeting and a short demonstration will take place. Each month the group meets a different art medium is discussed, an artist is highlighted, or a piece of art history is discussed. Members are also encouraged to bring at least one painting for display around town that is voted upon at the Tipping of the Brush.

“Each month we have a contest where our members vote on their favorite piece,” she said. “Our art pieces are set up around town at a few different locations, as a way of sharing art with the community.”
