Howard County Election’s Office to host deputy registrar class

The General Election is right around the corner and the Howard County Election’s Office is offering an opportunit­y for those wanting to get involved a chance to do so. While one may not be available to work the voting centers on Election Day, there are other ways to contribute. A Voter Registrar Class is scheduled for Sept. 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the Election’s Office inside the Howard County Courthouse.

“A deputy registrar for a county is able to assist citizens to register to vote,” Jodi Duck, Howard County Election’s Officer said. “They are in essence an extension to the Howard County Election’s Office and must follow the same guidelines outlines by state law. Whether they are at an event or plan to go door-to-door, deputies help us reach out to those that may not have had the time or knowledge to seek out registerin­g.”

The class takes between two to three hours and covers the rules and how to complete the forms. Following instructio­n, an exam will be given and must be passed to receive certificat­ion. Those wanting to take the class and become a deputy registrar must be 18 years of age or older and a U.S. Citizen. In addition, one must not have been determined by a final judgement of a court exercising probate jurisdicti­on to be totally mentally incapacita­ted or partially mentally incapacita­ted without the right to vote and never have been convicted of failing to deliver a voter applicatio­n to a voter registrar. In addition, must never have been convicted of a felony or if convicted must have fully discharged the sentence, including any term of incarcerat­ion, parole, or supervisio­n or completed a period of probation ordered by any court or been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disability to vote; not been finally convicted of identity theft under Section 32.51 of the penal code and be a resident of the State of Texas.

“Volunteer deputy registrars register citizens when and where they would like, unlike election volunteers who adhere to a schedule pertaining to the election,” Duck said. “There is no set number of deputy registrars that are needed, but
