Coahoma wins nail biter over San Angelo Lake View

- Special to the Herald

COAHOMA — Fans were sitting on the edge of their seats Saturday at the CES competition gym to watch the Bulldogettes win a tightly fought match against the San Angelo Lake View Maidens in five sets — 25-17, 25-14, 23-25, 26-28, 16-14.

Entering into the final game, the Maidens were on a roll after coming from behind to win the third and fourth sets, and it looked as if Lake View would pull off a victory by starting off with a 4-point run. However, the Bulldogettes rallied.

“We won the first two sets but it seemed like we almost got content in the third set and then the fourth set didn't go our way,” said Coahoma Head Volleyball Coach Jamie Bonner. “We didn't go all out for every single point in those sets, so I told them that was something we needed to adjust. You have to be on it mentally and physically especially with a team like this.”

With the win, the Bulldogettes finish preseason with a 9-1 record.

“I think it was actually good for us to go five sets to see if we can finish,” Bonner said. “We haven't had many long games, we've had a couple that went four. I think it was good for them mentally to see our team has each other's backs, and we can overcome that adversity and win.”

MaKynlee Overton led the Bulldogettes to victory with 14 kills, 11 digs and five blocks. Senior Ashley Romero had nine kills and three blocks. Senior Julia Cox had nine kills and sophomore Zoie Joslin had 26 assists.

Junior Madison Rodgers also had a standout game with five kills, four digs, four aces and one block. She was also solid on the serving line during a crucial part of the third and fifth sets.

“She is a really strong server and that is huge for us,” Bonner said. “She is a great asset. With the game on the line, she can serve just as hard as she does when it's just the first point of the set. I am very proud of her on how she performed at the game.”

Rodgers said she tries to not let the pressure distract her.

“I just give it to God at that moment,” Rodgers said. “I just tell him I can do anything through you and it happens.”
