Big Spring nearing district opener against first-place Andrews next Friday night
The Big Spring Steers will once again have Friday night off after the Homecoming Game against Pampa was canceled on Monday. The next time they are scheduled to take the field is for their first district game of the year against Andrews at home on Oct. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
Big Spring is still planning to hold a bonfire for juniors and seniors on Thursday night and will put on a White Wash for the seniors at the High School. The following is a press release from Big Spring ISD Superintendent Jay McWilliams regarding the canceled game and Homecoming festivities:
“As everyone is fully aware, we had to make the very difficult decision to cancel our JV and Varsity football games this week due to complications from COVID-19. This decision was made in the best interest of our players, trainers, and coaches. We also felt this would give us the absolute best chance of moving forward with our season, and would be the best decision for the health and well-being of our kids.”
McWilliams continued, “As we looked ahead to our game next week (October 9), we were forced to look at uncertain situations surrounding the return of players and coaches, plus take measures in order to safely return to practice. To be open and fair with our opponent (Pampa), we had a conversation with the head coach earlier in the week and let them know about the uncertainty of our availability to play on October 9. The discussion centered around the possibility that we would not be ready to play on Friday due to the number of players coming back at different times of the week, and many had not worked out for at least a week due to being out sick. Both our head coach and Pampa’s head coach agreed that Pampa could look for another game in case we could not play. This was done in order to be fair to Pampa, and give them ample time to search for an opponent.
