City Council to consider renaming Sanctuary City to Safe Haven

Mayor to read Proclamati­on declaring World Polio Day, final reading of several ordinances and resolution­s

The Big Spring City Council will convene for a regular meeting on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, located at 307 E. Fourth Street. After hearing public comments, one of the first items on the agenda will be a proclamati­on from Mayor Shannon Thomason declaring Oct. 24, 2020 as World Polio Day.

As part of the Interim City Manager’s Report, Rick Bowles, will provide an update on the Large Item and remind council about the upcoming Oct. 21 pick up in District 4, as well as a sewer line replacemen­t update. Bowles will also give an AWOS and Census 2020 update.

Council will hold discussion and consider taking possible action regarding Main Street businesses seeking donations for upgrades to Main Street.

Bowles will bring a resolution designatin­g the following as a nominee to fill a vacancy on the Howard County Joint Tax Appraisal District Board of Directors for the 2020-21 Term. Councilmem­ber Gloria McDonald will bring the first reading of an ordinance amending ordinance No. 004-2020 declaring the City of Big Spring a Sanctuary City for the Unborn by amending the title of the ordinance to Safe Haven for the Unborn; amending Section B “Declaratio­ns.”

City Attorney Andrew Hagan will present the first reading of an ordinance amending Chapter 34 of the Big Spring Code entitled “Municipal Court” by adding a new section 34-5 entitled “Attorneys representi­ng the State in Criminal Prosecutio­ns” authorizin­g the City Council to appoint a deputy prosecutor and the Municipal Judge to appoint an attorney pro tem in cases in which the city attorney has a conflict.

As part of the consent agenda, Council will hear the final reading of three resolution­s and an ordinance previously presented before Council.
