Big Spring boys finish second, girls finish third at Andrews Double Dual swim meet

The Big Spring Swim Team participat­ed in their second meet of the season last weekend at the Andrews Double Dual. The schools that participat­ed were Andrews, Big Spring, Seminole, and Vega. It was a good day for the Steers as a team with the boys finishing second and the girls taking home third-place. The next time that this group will enter the pool is this weekend at the Big Spring YMCA when they host a Double Dual of their own against Abilene High and Abilene Cooper on Saturday.

Big Spring's boys finished in second place behind Andrews (324) with 61 points but were able to finish in front of third-place Seminole (54). The girls finished in third place behind Andrews (224) and Seminole (111) with 56 total points. They were still able to finish ahead of last-place Vega (16).

Here are the results for Big Spring's swimmers from the Andrews Double Dual:

In the Boys' 200-yard medley relay, the group of freshman Christian Pantoja-Strickland (36.89), sophomore David Summers (41.20), sophomore Morgan Griffith (43.77), and Ismael Castillo finished in third place with a total time of 2:01.86.

In the Girls' 200-yard Freestyle, freshman Katherine Greene finished in sixth-place with a total time of 3:07.96.

Sophomore David Summers finished in fourth place (2:57.55) in the Boys' 200 Yard IM, which was about five seconds faster than he swam the same race at the first meet in Pecos.

Sophomore Malaki Vaughn finished in third place in the Girls' 50 Yard Freestyle with a final time of 31.55 seconds. Her teammates Jayda Overton (9th, 35.07), Sapphire Martinez (12th, 37.18), Brooklynne Heffle (13th, 37.19), and Steffany Pina Arment (15th, 46.71) also were in the top performers for that specific race.

In the Boys' 50 Yard Freestyle, Ismael Castillo (8th, 32.30) was the top Steer finisher. Sophomore Carson Millsap (10th, 34.34), Toby Phillips (11th, 34.97), and Matthew Nieves (15th, 53.18) rounded out the Top 15 finishers.

Sophomore Naomi Reyes finished in second place (1:26.07) in the Girls' 100 Yard Butterfly. Freshman Katherine Greene (DQ) was the lone other Big Spring swimmer to take place in that event.

Senior Manuel Castillo finished in second place (1:06.15) in the Boys' 100 Yard Butterfly.

Sophomore swimmer Jayda Overton (1:23.68) finished in eighth place of the Girls' 100 Yard Freestyle.

Morgan Griffith finished 12th in the Boys' 100 Yard Freestyle with a final time of 1:17.95. Carson Millsap finished in 14th place with a time of 1:23.24.

Arely Cruz-Garcia placed eighth (7:14.06) in the Girls' 500-Yard Freestlye. Christian Pantoja-Strickland finished in fourth on the Boys' side of the same event with a time of 7:07.16.

The quarter of Malaki Vaughn, Naomi Reyes, Arely Cruz-Garcia, and Brooklynne Heffle took home third place in the Girls' 200 Yard Freestyle Relay with a total time of 2:09.04.

Big Spring also finished third in the Boys' 200 Yard Freestyle Relay with the grouping of David Summers, Christian PantojaStr­ickland, Ismael Castillo, and Morgan Griffith with a time of 2:06.91.

Malaki Vaughn finished in fifth place in the Girls' 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:23.28. Cruz-Garcia finished seventh (1:24.07) and Heffle finishedni­nth (1:36.74). On the boys' side, Toby Phillips finished in seventh place (1:39.87).

Naomi Reyes finished in third place and was the only Lady Steer to place in the Girls' 100-Yard Breaststro­ke (1:29.35). On the Boys' side, Summers (5th, 1:31.50), Morgan Griffith (6th, 1:37.29), Ismael Castillo (7th, 1:41.84), and Matthew Nieves (8th, 2:00.64) all rounded out the Top 10.

Lastly, the grouping of Vaughn, Reyes, Overton, and Cruz-Garcia finished in third place in the Girls' 400 Yard Freestyle Relay (4:49.03). On the boys' side, the quartet of Ethan Barker, Carson Millsap, Matthew Nieves, and Toby Phillips finished in sixth place (6:36.18).
