Local Big Spring resident, Beverly Grant awarded Spirit of Relay Award

Howard County Relay For Life is no stranger to attention when it comes to annual recognitio­ns. This year, the tradition continues as Howard and Glasscock County’s Relay for Life Co-Chair Beverly Grant was awarded the Spirit of Relay Award.

“Each year a winner is chosen in the South Texas Region for our Spirit of Relay award. As you can imagine, our South Region is pretty large. Out of hundreds, possibly thousands of volunteers, this years winner is from right there in Big Spring, Texas,” Tammy Merwin, Community Developmen­t

Manager for American Cancer Society, said.

Beverly Grant, who is local to the Big Spring area, has been recognized as the 2020 recipient for the South Region volunteer groups/committees for the Relay for Life.

“In 2020, right in the mist of a global pandemic, everything for the American Cancer Society as we know it changed almost overnight. Our events were cancelled, volunteers scattered and fundraisin­g became one of the most difficult challenges to overcome. Never once did Beverly’s drive or passion take a back seat,” Merwin said. “Not once did she detour from making sure her mission to bring awareness and funding for the Big Spring area stayed top of mind. Beverly, with the help of her Event Leadership Team, transition­ed an in person event to a virtual event within weeks. She visited local hospitals and rallied troops to gather all necessary informatio­n to make sure as many people as possible would know why the American Cancer Society is so important,”

Merwin continued, “She did this all while being in and out of the hospital herself battling her own health issues. Beverly is the true definition of a warrior and a hero, which ironically was
