Big Spring preparing for game against talented Springtown squad this Friday

The monkey is finally off of the Steer’s back.

For the first time since 2014, the Big Spring Steers (5-3) have won their BiDistrict round playoff game. The Steers took the field last Friday night in Pecos to face the El Paso Riverside Rangers for a chance to advance to the second round of the playoffs. In a game that went back-and-forth for the entire four-plus quarters, the Steers were able to prevail 32-26 in a triple-overtime thriller that will go down in the Big Spring record books.

Now, they will be challenged by the best team they have faced all season this Friday night when they go head-to-head with the Springtown Porcupines (9-2) on Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium (Abilene Christian University).

What would it mean to the Big Spring program to go out and grab another postseason win this Friday against a top-notch Springtown team? Head Coach Cannon McWilliams knows that it would be an incredible victory and is aware that his team is playing David to Springtown’s Goliath this week.

“I think Springtown is ranked right below Alabama in the polls,” McWilliams joked. “It would be a huge win. The main thing we’re focused on is just competing. We want to play and execute the best that we can and limit their big plays. If we can do that, then we’ll feel good about it.”

With that being said, every team left in the playoffs is a good team and Big Spring deserves to be in the second round just as much as Springtown does. One of the most common expressions in the world of football is, “Any given Sunday.” This of course refers to the NFL and their scheduled day of the week, but it can be used for any level of the sport. The expression means that no matter who takes the field, whether they are undefeated or winless, they should never be underestimated and will have a chance to win that specific game.
