City Council to canvas Special Election results; declare unopposed candidate for upcoming May Election

The Big Spring City Council will convene this evening at 5:30, in the Council Chambers, after not meeting for a few weeks. The community is encouraged to attend the meeting in person or through live stream on Channel 17 on Suddenlink or http://mybigsprin­g. com/224/Channel-17-Live.

Those who are unable to attend the meeting in person, but would like to address the Council can do so during the public comment section by calling 432-264-2411. Each person will be allotted five minutes to speak.

The Council will hear two emergency readings as part of new business. The first of which will allow Council to canvas the returns from the Special Election held on March 6. The results will officially announce the new seat holders for District 5 and 6. An emergency reading will also be read to declare the unopposed candidate in the upcoming May Election for Council seat District 6. The emergency reading could cancel the General Election for District 6.

As part of the City Manager report, Todd Darden provided an update on winter storm issues including power outages and water lines before providing an update on large item pick up for District 2 and 3. Following the City Manager report, Dr. Steve Ahmed provided a Covid-19 update to the Council.

A first reading for a resolution requesting on behalf of the Citizens of Big Spring that the Texas Department of Transporta­tion perform and study and subsequent­ly authorize the placement of traffic lights at the Intersecti­on of FM 700 and E. 11th Place.

The Council members will hear the report on racial profiling analysis for 2020 from Big Spring Police Department Chief Chad Williams.

Public Works Director Shane Bowles will be asking for considerat­ion and possible action authorizin­g a contract for emergency sludge removal at the Water Treatment Plant and authorize City Manager or his designee to execute necessary documents. Bowles will also
