- By DUSTIN POPE Heralad Sports Writer

The Big Spring Steers Boys Golf team took to the links to host the Big Spring Invitational at Commanche Trail Golf Course this past weekend, March 12-13.

The Steers completed against Levelland, Snyder, and Sweetwater. It would be the Big Spring Steers who held the head of the field title, winning by a total of 60 strokes.

The Team consists of five high school Steers: Alex Leuschner, Phillip Lopez, Reese Harris, Christian Martinez, and Elijah Gonzales. The Steers played two rounds of golf over two days and combined all individual scores to create a team total. The team with the lowest total was declared the winner of the invitational.

Day one found Elijah Gonzales coming in with a 99 total after 18 holes. Christian Martinez followed him with a score of 89 after 18. Reese Harris scored an 81 during his 18 holes of golf. Phillip Lopez shot an 85, and Alex Leuschner shot an amazing 74 on the day. The hard work on the course on day one would bring the Steers one day total to 329. That was enough to take a 30 stroke lead after the first day of play.

Day two was a reflection of the same for the Steers Team.

All the boys played hard and were determined they would not let the pressure up on the other team. Day two found Gonzales shooting a 104. Martinez came in at 90. Harris also shot a 90. Lopez shot an 84, one shot better than his previous day, and Leuschner would close at a 77, giving the second day total of 341.

After officials combined the two scores, the Steers were displaying 678; that team total would be good enough to dominate this tournament, and have the Steers winning by over 60 strokes.
