BSPD announces second arrest in ongoing murder investigation
The Big Spring Police Department announced the second arrest in the ongoing investigation into the murder of Casey Brackett, which occurred on March 8.
On March 18, 2021, at approximately 9:30 a.m., the Big Spring Police Department Criminal Investigations Division served an arrest warrant on Hayden Douglas McMurrin, a white male, 31 years of age, charging him with the murder of Casey Brackett, a white male, 29 years of age.
McMurrin was already in the Howard County Jail at the time he was charged with murder due to him previously being arrested on March 12, 2021, and charged with Tampering/ Fabricating Physical Evidence, a Felony 3 offense, which was also connected to this murder investigation.
The first arrest in the murder investigation took place March 16 at approximately 4:40 p.m. The BSPD announced Anselmo Vicente Rangel, a Hispanic male, 24 years of age, was arrested and charged with murder, in the same investigation.
Officers were originally dispatched to the area of 18th and Austin on March 8 around 9:10 p.m. in reference to a gunshot victim. According to the original press release, upon arrival Casey Brackett was found to be in the driver’s seat of a white 2007 Ford Focus which was pulled over and stopped on the side of the road. Officers observed Brackett had suffered an apparent gunshot wound. Big Spring Fire/EMS arrived on scene and immediately began treating Brackett. Brackett was transported to Scenic Mountain Medical Center with life threatening injuries and unfortunately succumbed to his injuries and pronounced deceased.
