FEMA Disaster Assistance

- Special to the Herald City of Big Spring

City of Big Spring Emergency Management is working with the Texas Department of Emergency Management and FEMA to help citizens of Big Spring and Howard County mitigate property damage resulting from the recent winter weather event.

On February 19, 2021, President Biden included Howard County in the emergency declaration for the State of Texas which allows citizens to apply for financial assistance for repairs made to their homes and businesses. The deadline to apply for assistance is Wednesday, April 21, 2021. City of Big Spring Emergency Management urges any citizen that had damage as a result of the storm to apply for assistance and get aid for recovery.

When you apply for assistance, you will need to have the following information readily available:

• A current phone number where you can be contacted.

• Your address at the time of the disaster and the address where you are now staying.

• Your Social Security number, if available.

• A general list of damage and losses.

• If you are insured, the insurance policy number, or the agent and company name.

If it is safe to do so, clean up your property to prevent further damage. Take photos to document damage before beginning cleanup and repairs. Remember to keep receipts from all purchases related to cleanup and repair of your property.

Disaster assistance may include financial assistance for temporary lodging and home repairs, low-interest loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.
