Big Spring Steers Fall to Levelland Lobos in District clash 6 to 0 Saturday afternoon

-

The Big Spring Steers baseball team hosted the Levelland Lobos this past Saturday afternoon March. 20 in a district game. The Steers fell to the Lobos 6 to 0. Big Spring played hard all game long, but unfortunately, they were not only battling the Levelland Lobos, but they also had to deal with one of the worst cases of umpiring I have ever seen.

Sophomore Ricky Escovvedo took the mound to start the game for the Steers. Levelland had key hitting in the first inning, added from a few blown calls by the umpire, that gave the Lobos an early lead of 3 to 0. The Steers bats were held in check all day long by a good pitching performance from the Levelland starter. The boys battled in every at-bat, and with help from the umpire once again giving the Lobos some favorable key strike calls, they would not do much on the day.

After a rough first inning, Escovedo settled into a grove and kept the Lobos off the board again until they scored one run in the third inning. Levelland then scored two more runs in the fourth inning, extending the lead to 6 to 0. It was a lead that the Steers couldn't fight back from. Big Spring did manage to get some runners on from time to time throughout the game but never could push the runs across the plate.

Take nothing away from the Levelland Lobos performance. They came and played a good game with timely hitting, they did deserve to win this game, but the umpire did play a part in this game, and that should never happen.

The Steers will learn from this loss and will bounce back even stronger. The Steers keep district play rolling when they take on the Snyder Tigers in Snyder this Tuesday, March 23; the first pitch is scheduled for 7:01.
