One more piece of a legacy: Special donation made to Heritage Museum

Jerry Worthy, founder and long-time champion of the Heritage Museum of Big Spring, passed away in February, but the museum staff learned Tuesday that he left one final legacy to the organizati­on that links Big Spring to it’s rich history.

“Jerry Worthy was the founder of the museum and the first president, and he passed away and he gifted the museum with $100,000,” said Heritage Museum Executive Director Tammy Schrecengo­st. “We decided the best place for it to go would be to the Endowment Fund. We’re trying to reach $1 million as our goal for our endowment, because if we get to that goal, it will help the museum become more self-supporting.”

An endowment fund is a pool of money that is invested to draw interest. The interest from the Museum’s Endowment Fund will be used to pay for Museum expenses, leaving the principal of the fund untouched.

“It ensures that the museum will carry on long after we’re gone,” Schrecengo­st said, adding that the fund is nearing its $1 million goal as a result of
