Virginia Ruth Miller
Virginia Ruth Miller, known to many as “Miss Miller”, was born Nov. 29, 1953, in Odessa, Texas, and she died Aug. 4, 2020, in Big Spring, Texas, after a brief illness of cancer.
“Miss Miller” graduated from Odessa High School, then attended Texas Tech where she obtained both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. She taught World History, World Geography and U.S. History at Big Spring High School from 1978 until she retired in May 2016, for a total of 38 years. She served as History Department Chairperson at Big Spring High School and was a current member of Texas Retired Teachers Association. During her 38 years at Big Spring High School, “Miss Miller” was also class sponsor for all four classes, and was the sponsor for the Academic Challenge
Team in the mid to late 1990’s. Under her direction the Academic Challenge Team went to the National Competition in New Orleans in May 1997. Outside of school and teaching she loved reading, crocheting, and crafting. “Miss Miller” will be remembered for her enthusiasm for life and teaching and for her “meows” in the classroom. Many fellow educators and students considered her to be a “Master Teacher” of the Histories.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Ben and Joy Miller of Odessa, Texas.
She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law: David and Terri Miller of Odessa, Texas. “Miss Miller” is also survived by numerous fellow educators, friends and students.
Because of COVID, a celebration of her life was postponed, but will be held Tuesday, June 29, 2021, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. in the Pavilion Room at the Hotel Settles.
