Forsan shines as they win the eighth annual Howard County Bowl 35-14

-

The Coahoma Bulldogs' run at the Howard County Bowl is over. The Forsan Buffaloes made doubly sure of that as they handed the Bulldogs a 35-14 licking Friday night at Memorial Stadium

Coming into the eighth annual meeting between the two foes, Coahoma had won the last four contests. This Forsan win left the series tied at four apiece. The Buffaloes did it by playing relatively a mistake free game and a defense that came up big when it had to.

Three times in the contest the Forsan defense stopped Coahoma deep in Forsan territory avoiding potential Forsan scores. On Coahoma's opening drive of the game the Bulldogs marched from their own 15-yard line down to the Forsan three. On fourth and goal from the three, the heart of the Forsan defense, led by the likes of Katcher Dawson, Nolan Park and Koldin Averette stopped Coahoma all-state running back Brysen

Kerby just short of the goal line.

In the second quarter, thanks to a 40-yard pass from Billy Bailey to Arian Emerson Coahoma again got deep in Forsan territory. But on a fourthand-one from the Forsan 12 the Buffaloes stopped Kerby for no gain.

In the third quarter Coahoma drove from their own 33-yard line down the Forsan 1. On fourth down the Buffaloes defense again rose to the task, stopping Kerby short of the goal line.

Meanwhile the opportunist Forsan offense took advantage of Coahoma pitfalls. Three times Coahoma faltered in its punting game. The first one came following a 9-yard Coahoma punt, giving Forsan good field position at the Coahoma 30. Six plays later Forsan quarterback Major Stockton scored from two yards out. Park's extra point gave Forsan a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Coahoma punter mishandled the snap and had to fall on the ball at the Coahoma 10. Three plays later Chris Mendez scored, putting Forsan up 21-6 at the half.

Forsan sealed the deal late in the third quarter following a 15-yard Coahoma punt. Forsan went 37 yards in seven plays, capped off by an 11-yard scoring run by Nate Hernandez, putting Forsan up 28-6.

On paper, Coahoma won the yardage battle outgaining Forsan 403-290. Coahoma got yards in big chucks like Emerson's 40 yard reception, a 56-yard run by Ky Kemper, a 68 yard pass play to Kerby and a 75-yard scoring run by reserve running back Jaidyn Vineyard late in the game.

Kerby led all rushers with 127 yards on 21 carries. Stockton led Forsan with 104 yards on 10 carries including a beautiful 60-yard scoring run in the second quarter. His ball fake to his running back completely fooled the Coahoma defense and he sped untouched up the middle.

Coahoma cornerback Billy Starr stymied a Forsan threat by picking off a pass at the Coahoma 14 in the second quarter.

Friday Coahoma will host Miles at 7:30 p.m. while Forsan will be on the road against highly regarded Post at 7:30.
