Sands drop first game of the season to Roby

- BY DUSTIN POPE Herald Sports Writer

The Sands Mustangs fell to the Roby Lions this past Friday night with a final score of 70-21. It was a very tough game for the Mustangs to open up the season. This will serve as a learning experience for Sands as they move forward this season.

The first quarter was dominated by the Roby Lions. They opened up the scoring with a 45 yard TD pass. They scored again when they connected on a 51 yard TD pass. The Roby Lions would not be done with the scoring as they connected on a 35 yard TD pass making this a 20-0 game after one quarter of play.

In the second quarter it was the Sands Mustangs who scored their first TD of the season when Aiden Gutierrez had a eight yard run for the score. The

Lions answered right back with another touchdown of there own when they had a 30 yard TD pass making this a 28-7 lead for the Roby Lions. Roby tacked on another touchdown on a 16 yard pass giving them a 36-7 lead. The Sands Mustangs tried to find a way back in this game as they scored on a 11 yard run by Michael Diaz. With the Mustangs touchdown the score was now 36-14. The Lions were not done scoring as they scored on the kickoff return making this a 42-14 game at halftime.

Starting the second half of play the Sands Mustangs faced a uphill battle to try and get back in this game. Unfortunately the third quarter was much like the first two with Roby controlling the action all over the field . The Lions scored again on a two yard run. They followed that up with another ten yard run making this game a blow out at 58-15.

The Sands did tack on another score when Rodolfo Juarez broke loose on a 54 yard TD run making this a 58-21 game at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter started just like the first three did for the Sands Mustangs with the Roby Lions scoring twice in the quarter putting this game to rest winning a blow out by a final score of 70-21.

There is no doubt that this is not how the Sands Mustangs wanted to start the season. This game will only serve as growing opportunity for this young team. They now have the experience of a real game under their belt and will be far better from here on out.
