Presentations and proclamation on City agenda Tuesday
In its regular meeting Tuesday, the Big Spring City Council will hear several presentations from local groups, and Mayor Shannon Thomason will present a proclamation naming October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the City Council Chambers, 307 E. Fourth St. Citizens may attend the meeting in person or through telecommunications on Local Channel 17 through Suddenlink, or on the city website at mybigspring.com/224/Channel17-Live .
Following the meeting's call to order, invocation, and Pledge of Allegiance, members of the public will have the opportunity to address the council, followed by the first of the three presentations, by Diana Martinez of the Howard County Resource Center.
Jacklyn Roland of Emergency Chaplain the Services
and Lynn Creswell of Victim Services will give presentations before the council following Martinez's presentation.
Thomason will follow the three presentations with a proclamation citing several statistics regarding domestic violence, including “...an average of 20 people experience intimate partner physical violence every minute, which equates to more than 10 million abuse victims annually,” and “...of those victims, nearly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.”
The proclamation goes on to declare “I, Shannon D. Thomason, do hereby proclaim the month of October to be recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Big Spring, Texas, as we work together to eliminate domestic violence from our community.”
