The Steers made it rain Tuesday afternoon at Steer Gym - threes that is. Big Spring concluded a successful two game home stand by defeating the Denver City Mustangs 71-48 much to the pleasure of its fans.

Using their three-point barrage, the Steers started Monday by defeating Eldorado 64-35. Gavin Greathouse and Chris Martinez combined for six threes in the win with Greathouse making four. Greathouse led all scorers with 20 points, followed by post player Isiah Holloway with 18 points. Martinez scored 12 points and Eli Cobos chipped in eight.

Tuesday night it was all about Martinez who was lights out. Martinez had a tough act to follow after Big Spring won the junior varsity game 70-32, a game Derrick Wallach pumped in 31 points for Big Spring, many coming on three-pointers.

Martinez, a 5-foot-6 senior guard, was unstoppable, finishing with a career-high 36 points on a 12 of 16 shooting night. Nine of his shots were beyond the arch. "The thing about Chris is that once he hits a couple you could be in for a long night," said first year Big Spring coach Bobby Cash. "You know everybody looks at us and they laugh because we're so short. but these guys play pretty good," he said of his team that starts only one player over six foot tall.

Rebounding wise Big Spring held its own against a much taller D-City squad Leading the way was Saquan Fizer and Holloway, who combined for 11 rebounds. Greathouse, who made three threes himself, ran the offense well, dishing out seven assists.

Martinez got Big Spring on the right track by making three threes in the opening quarter. In the last minute of the quarter Big Spring scored 12 points, via four consecutive D-City turnovers. Big Spring led 21-6 after one.

Using its height advantage Denver City battled back and kept it close for a while. The Mustangs got as close as 28-22 when Rick Montes made backto-back threes late in the second quarter. But every threat was answered by a barrage of Martinez three-pointers.

Coach Cash said he likes his team's chances as district play approaches. "Lubbock Estacado is the team to beat. They're ranked like fourth in the state and have a 6-10 player. Just about all of our kids are seniors, they've brought into what we're trying to teach them. We're starting to get some fan base and

people are getting excited," said Cash

The Steers will be in action Dec. 28 when they compete in the Brownwood tournament.
