A year of supporting disabled veterans in Big Spring

- By AMANDA DUFORAT Special Contributing Writer

Mission: To provide support for local veterans.

The local D.A.V. (Disabled American Veterans) Chapter 47 of Big Spring can say that the mission was accomplished in 2021. The organization gained a larger support system in the community this past year, and in turn was able to provide more assistance to local veterans.

"Every dollar that we raise goes to support veterans in the Howard County community. Whether it be providing assistance with rent, utilities, food, and other daily necessities, or doing what we can to ensure that no veteran is forgotten throughout the year, but especially at the holidays," Mike Tarpley, Vice Commander for the Big Spring Chapter of the D.A.V., said.

Last year began with assistance being provided for local veterans, as many were still trying to stay afloat from the impact that Covid had on the economy, finances, and employment. Before the first quarter was over, two local businesses stepped up and arranged fundraisers for the D.A.V. Back in Motion Chiropractic Services organized a barbecue luncheon, while Star Chrysler Dodge held their firstever cornhole tournament. The summer of 2021 also brought a new fundraiser event: KBEST Media's Adrienne Green led a comedy night with the Veterans of Comedy.

"The support that we received from the community in 2021 was a blessing. We are grateful and truly blessed by the businesses who stepped up and showed their support," Ed Meiser, chapter commander of the D.A.V. of Big Spring, said. "It is amazing to see what can be done when a community comes together in support of our veterans."

In addition to the rental assistance and utilities the DAV provides throughout each year, this year's annual Dove Hunt honored four veterans for the ninth year - two that served in Vietnam and two who served in Iraq. The Memorial at the Plaza took place for the 14th year, recognizing those Howard County veterans who have sacrificed their lives since the attacks of September 11, 2001.
