- Special to the Herald

Coahoma: A lot of times, spring break week is a period for teams to take some time off rest their bodies, Not for the Coahoma Bulldogettes, however. Coahoma mentor Alexander Orosco is just the opposite. He has a highly ranked Coahoma squad playing five games this week. Game two for this week was a 14-1 run-rule against Sweetwater here Wednesday.

No. 12 state-ranked Coahoma, now 14-4-1, started the week Tuesday with a district opening 18-0 win over Crane at home. Thursday's noon home game will be another district contest versus Sonora. Coahoma will then meet highly ranked Class 3A opponent Bushland at Lubbock Christian University. Finally, Coahoma will conclude the week with an afternoon game on the road against Snyder.

This barrage of games doesn't faze the Bulldogettes. in fact, they thrive on it. "Kudos to the girls. They want to play," said Orosco. "It's a mental thing like today's game (against Sweetwater). The girls are up here at 9:30 (am) taking hitting practice. Then they go out and do fielding practice. So it's a win-win situation. I get to practice and a game out of them. They love to play the game."

In the meantime, Coahoma gets to play good competition. Sweetwater went two rounds in the playoffs last year. Snyder, like Sweetwater, is a Class 4A opponent. Bushland, located in Amarillo, has a 16-6 record, ranked No. 9 in Class 3A.

These are games of interest, good competition. We will travel to meet them if it's a game of interest," Orosco said.

Coahoma had little trouble with Sweetwater on this day. Because of the ten-run rule, it only needed four at-bats to end the game in the top of the fifth.

Makayla Calvio pitched fired a three-hitter in going the distance. She struck out five and walked three. Meanwhile, the Coahoma bats punished Snyder pitching for nine hits. Sweetwater pitchers hurt their cause by walking eight, including walking in two runs.

Coahoma scratched for two runs in the first. Leadoff hitter and shortstop Madison Rodgers started with a triple to center field. She scored on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Wells. Karleigh Burt, who had walked, scored the second run when she came home from third on a wild pitch.

Coahoma padded the lead to 5-0 in the second when Wells' second sacrifice fly platted Maci Green, who had singled. Freshman Avery Rodriguez drove in two runs with a base hit in the inning.

Coahoma put the game out of reach by batting around in the third inning, scoring six runs. The Bulldogettes sealed the deal with three more runs in the fourth.

Burt led all Coahoma hitters by singling three times in three trips to the plate, driving in two runs, and stealing a base. Calvio and Green each had two hits in the game.

Sweetwater's lone run in the third inning came via a Coahoma error. The Bulldogs helped themselves get out of the inning by turning a double play. Jenika Fuentes got two of Sweetwater's three hits.

No sign of fatigue for the Bulldogettes. "Tired? We can't be tired. We've got to be ready to roll," Orosco said.
