Evidently Mitchell Woodard is a heck of a track coach.

In the few years I've been back, Woodard has been coaching athletes to success. He was at Big Spring and his teams were good, winning several district track titles and one regional title.

Woodard headed east down the road, and since he's been there, the Coahoma track teams have improved drastically; more recently, two district championships and an area title.

The Coahoma boys won the area title last week by scoring heavily in the relays, racking up 56 points.

Woodard gets the most out of his team. Where else can you find the winning sprint relay team anchored by a discus thrower, who's also qualified for regional in the discus? That being none other than

Here's something that you rarely see: At the 4A area track meet, where Big Spring competed, Canyon's Kashlee Dickinson won the girl's pole vault with a 13-4 mark. The winning height in the boys competition: 13-3, Lance Ottinger, Dumas. You've come a long ways baby !!!! One of the best track seasons in Big Spring history. Seven won track meets. Let's roll the dice at regional...I'm riding with Big Spring.

Down to the wire

WJCAA baseball and softball is winding down. Both teams are in thick of things. The top four teams advance to the regional tournament.

The Lady Hawks are in good shape, sitting in second place with a 12-4 league record and 27-9 overall mark. No. 5 ranked Odessa is 15-1 and leads the league. The Lady Wrangers are 41-4 overall. Midland

College is third at 9-7 and Clarendon currently has he fourth spot at 10-10.

Howard is coming off taking three out of four games against El Paso College on the road. The Hawks are coming off a 2-2 split against Western Texas.

The last game at Foundation Field was a doozy. Howard scored two runs in the ninth to take a 19-18 win.

The game highlight was a grand slam by Nicholas Thibodeau.

The Hawks are in a fight for a playoff spot. New Mexico Junior College and Midland College lead the pace at 17-7, followed by Odessa College at 1810. Western Texas and Howard College (15-9) and Howard (14-10) are fighting for the fourth spot. Both the Hawks and Lady Hawks have eight conference games left. The regular season ends May 7.
