Bulldogettes win area championship
ABILENE — Freshman Hannah Wells threw a no hitter, walked one, and struck out nine to lead the Coahoma Bulldogettes to their second straight area championship on Saturday.
Despite the 100-plus degree weather at the Abilene Cooper High School softball field, the Bulldogettes began with an explosive first inning starting with thier leadoff hitter, Madison Rodgers. Rodgers blasted a triple off a 3-2 count off of Henrietta’s pitcher to set the tone of the inning. She soon scored off a single by Wells to put the first point up on the scoreboard. The Bulldogettes finished six runs up before Henrietta could get the third out.
Coahoma was shutout the next two innings at the plate by Henrietta until Karleigh Burt hit a 2-RBI homer in the fourth. Coahoma earned two more runs off singles by Nevaeh
Kerby and M. Rodgers to end the fifth 10-0. The Bulldogettes shut down Henrietta with three straight outs in the bottom of the fifth to earn the run-rule victory.
M. Rodgers led Coahoma at bat. The CHS senior went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and one RBI. Shae Lang was 1-for-3 with one run scored and two RBI. Burt went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBI, and a home run.
Kerby was 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Avery Rodriguez was 1-for-2 with one run scored. Christian Everett scored two runs and walked twice.
Next: Coahoma faces Merkel in the regional quarterfinals of the UIL championship softball playoffs. Game one is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Big Spring High School softball field. Coahoma will be the home team. Game two
