KBSB, Library teach kids importance of a clean environment
There is an ocean of possibilities of what the kids can learn while attending the different event at the Howard County Library this summer. This past week the focus was teaching the kids how to keep the environment clean. Keep Big Spring Beautiful's Tammy DePauw spoke to the kids and led several activities about the importance of not littering.
"We wanted to have the kids learn about the importance of keeping our environment clean because it does tie in with keeping our rivers and oceans clean," Sandra Verdin, Children's Library Program coordinator, said. "It's nice to be able to connect that with our ocean theme."
The kid's lesson began as they walked toward the Children's Room through a line of trash. As part of the presentation, kids were able to ask why there was trash on the ground and did their part to help clean it up.
"Giving the kids a visual was a good conversation starter. As they all walked in they were asking why there was trash on the floor and telling us how it shouldn't be there," Tammy DePauw, Keep Big Spring Beautiful representative, said. "We had the kids help us pick up the trash and let them know there is a way that they can help keep their community clean."
Following a short interactive video those attending were able to plant their own wildflowers, color their own superhero mask, and were able to take home several other goodies to help remind them to do their part keeping the community clean.
"We welcome everyone to come and join us. we want to show kids how to have enthusiasm for reading and how it leads them to be able to explore so many different worlds," Verdin said. "This is a space they can come and be
